My Flock of Birds...PPF

Another week done and another bird joins my flock.
This flock of birds must be the most unusual flock to gather together.
This week I decided to paint a Jay.
They can be quite shy birds, but I did manage to capture two together with my camera, which is a major achievement in my book.
For those of you living outside of the UK... here is what they look like.
I know that the same named birds can vary quite substantially across the globe.
This week I remembered to take the odd shot of wip along the way.

Firstly, a rough sketch to make sure I get the proportions right, before adding paints.
Enjoying the process especially with such great light.
Not sure I like to post such a close up of detail, but I know I enjoy seeing other artists work in progress, so here it is warts and all.
I hope this might help inspire others.

Here's the final painting, although I don't think having it stuck on the window has done it any favours.
It has robbed it of colour... typical now we have sunlight it's too bright!
And finally my flock.
I think I'll add one more, but I can't decide what bird.
If you have any requests or ideas I'd love to hear them.
Just pop a note in the comments below.
Do you have a favourite?
I keep changing my mind... but then that's just typical of me.
Thanks for visiting and I hope you have a fabulous Friday.
I'm linking as usual with Paint Party Friday.
Hope to see you there.
Toodleloo for now

    1. Isn't it just Valerie, I've started another bird this afternoon. I'm thinking that six might just be enough and then I'll move on to something else. Not sure what at this stage.
      Happy PPF to you

  4. I love that your birds are so different from ours ... I am sure there is overlapping in some birds, but yours are unique to me. Choose a favorite? Can't do it ... they are all beautiful in their own way and your paintings are stunning. Thank you Neesie ...

    1. I'm so happy that you have enjoyed seeing the difference in our birds and yours Andrea. When I lived overseas I loved seeing all the different birds, but I really missed the ones that I'd grown up with and knew so well.
I've started to paint another bird this afternoon. I'm thinking that six will be enough in my flock and I should start another collection, but at the moment I can't think what else to paint.
Thank you so much for your lovely compliments.
Happy PPF to you and I hope you have a lovely enjoyable weekend.

    1. My pleasure Giggles, I have started yet another bird this afternoon, but I'm thinking six will be enough of a collection. I need to think what I can paint for my next collection.
I love your blue jays... they have such a gorgeous colour, but I was keeping it to birds of the UK.
Maybe I could start birds from a different country? Now there's an idea. Thanks once again for your lovely kind words regarding my artwork.
      Hugs back to you

    1. Aww Linda that's so kind. I've enjoyed creating this little mini series and I'm now thinking that once I finish this set of six UK birds, I might try six from other countries.
I'm halfway through painting a robin, but I'm not sure how it will go as we're at the ugly stage at the moment.

  9. You did do well photographing two together then Neesie, because those shy birds certainly know all the tricks in the book to keep their privacy ;D)

I really appreciate you showing your wip - close up too. Sometimes it's a leap of faith isn't it to bare your art soul, but I do love the respect in which all our work is held by fellow artists (and, indeed our non-painting blogger friends), so thank you. It's good to see around the eye area especially, always tricky for me :D)

You've done another fabulous job on Mr Jay and your beautiful flock is certainly growing. Cheers and Happy PPF!

    1. They certainly are shy birds Sue, in fact I've never seen two together before or since that day.
I wasn't sure about showing the wip, as you say it's very difficult to put yourself out there, but I know I appreciate it when other artists show their work. I'm fascinated with the process and not just the finished work. I'm glad that you enjoyed seeing it.
I'm currently painting a robin, but it's at the early stages at the moment, so I'm not sure how it is going go. Fingers crossed!

    1. Hehe... well they'll hopefully be Mr Robin by the end of this week. He's in the very early stages at the moment, so we shall have to wait and see. I always think it's strange that I have no idea how my painting will progress... it just happens.

  11. I think the Pheasant is my favourite. I would like to suggest a Robin. Happy PPF!

    1. Well Carol, I'm happy to report that I'm currently painting a robin.
It's only in the early stages, but I'm hoping he will be good enough to join the flock.
Thanks for your suggestion... I appreciate it.
      Happy PPF to you too

    1. Well would you believe it Jan, I am painting a robin at the moment. I thought it wouldn't be a complete flock of UK birds, without a robin being included. The trouble is that there are so many other birds that I am missing out.
I hope you had a great weekend and that you have a good week ahead.

I'm currently adding a robin to the flock, but then think I might try painting something different. I'm not sure what at this stage.

  18. goes great with the other birds you've done :) Birds with the same names such a Robins or Jays do look so different to what I am use to. Robins in Canada are a lot bigger than Robins here and when I think of jays I tend to think of bright Blue Jays :)

    1. I know I was rather surprised to hear that Australia had robins, but then I saw one and realised it wasn't anything like our robins. It sounds like their robin's might be like the Canadian ones.
The magpies were also totally different too. I love the Blue Jays... such an amazing colour. I'm thinking that I might do a collection of birds from other countries next.

  19. holy cow Neesie!! Look at all your birds! Are you going to frame them and display them in a long hallway or on a well lit wall?? You SHOULD. They looks spectacular.

I honestly hadn't thought about what to do with the collection yet, as I'm still painting them. I've currently painting a robin and then I think I might call it a day... unless I do a collection from other countries?
Thanks Jenn for your lovely comment. I appreciate your kind words.

I had to paint our robin to join the gang. I hope you get to see him.
Have a great weekend and thanks for popping by once again.
